Our History
Where it all Began
Success runs in the van Schalkwyk genes. In fact you cannot talk
about business leaders in Polokwane and leave the van Schalkwyk
name out of the conversation.
For many years, the much loved Lotie van Schalkwyk had a supermarket
in Levubu. Popular with the locals the shop was well supported because
Lotie always had an ear and loved to chat with his friends, and his clients
were all his friends. In 1976 Lotie, who had recognized an opportunity in
the fast growing Polokwane, moved the family and opened TeeVeeRama in
Landros Maré Street. Polokwane was expanding rapidly and Lotie saw a gap
in the market for a home appliance and audio visual supplier.
With a passion for people and strong in the belief that service,
professionalism, competitive prices and quality products, Loties small
business grew from strength to strength very quickly. In 1979, Lotie’s son
Lodewyk had joined the business and they were forced to move to a bigger
premises in order to cope with the growing demand for their products and service,
and they continued to grow.
In 1986 they were forced to move to even bigger premises yet again.
TeeVeeRama was now the largest home appliance and audio visual retailer in town,
a town that was fast becoming a city. Lotie Snr, while still playing a major part
in the business, handed the reigns of management over to Lodewyk Jnr, who shared
the same passion for TeeVeeRama and its ongoing successes. Lotie Snr concentrated
on his other passion, his farming Alldays.
With the support from a large farming community and a growing demand for game hunting
and birding in Limpopo, Willem van Schalkwyk, Lodewyk Jnr’s brother, opened Mulitrama
Weapons in 1989. Sharing the family passion for people, Multirama Weapons under
Willem’s leadership followed the same trend as TeeVeeRama.
The van Schalkwyk’s were, and still are, recognized as business and community leaders,
and where assistance was required for community development and projects, you could
be sure the van Schalkwyk’s are there to lend a hand.
In 1992, Deons, a large discount chain, made TeeVeeRama and offer Lodewyk Jnr could
not refuse and TeeVeeRama was sold. Lodewyk Jnr kept the music division and Willem
joined his father on the farm. When Deons were taken over by Mass Stores, who had Game,
a decision was made to close Deons in town and staff and business moved to the Game Center
to trade under the Game banner.
Once again, a gap had been left in the market. The city now needed a specialized Audio Visual
and Music and Entertainment specialist. Enter Christiaan van Schalkwyk, son of Lodewyk Jnr,
who had just completed studies. Under the guidance and with the assistance of his father,
and support of his beloved Grandmother, Christiaan opened Audio Corporation in 2002.
There is no holding van Schalkwyk down. Christiaan shares the same mission, vision and passion
as his grandfather before him. Christiaan believes that he shares the same strengths and lists them
as “a passion to succeed, entrepreneurship and sound strategic input. He shares the same
“gut feel” for business and puts his strengths into implementing systems that deliver measurable results.
In five years Audio Corporation has grown from strength to strength, the Audio Visual specialist
now also have home appliance division and their sound and entertainment division is the only
one of its kind in Polokwane.
and there is more to come… Watch this space!!!
Audio Corporation and Mr Beds are now an online only store that delivers their goods
in and around Polokwane for free within a 20km radius, more convenient shopping for
its customers and still the same passion for service and quality in products.
